Be a tourist (anywhere, anytime)

One of the best things I ever did to disconnect is touring. Traveling to other countries or touring in my own town is a great way to get out for a few hours and appreciate the beauties of the world. Well, I guess living in Paris does help with having a lot of potential activities around, but just going on a walk, enjoying a museum or discovering a new place can do too!

So, my post is late this week because I had friends over from Canada and I went full tourist mode. I visited so many things and the weather was amazing! Let me tell you, when you live somewhere, it is so easy to forget the beauty of it. I have been living in Paris for more than 10 years, and to be perfectly honest, I really rarely get to be a tourist in my own town, so that was a great experience.

The weather was so nice we decided to mostly walk and do outdoor things:

  • Visiting Notre Dame de Paris (we ended up getting inside too since there was no queue and it’s free)
  • Walking pass the Louvre
  • Eating an ice cream in front of the Eiffel Tower
  • Taking a walk around Montmartre

Here you can see Le Louvre, Notre Dame de Paris, Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower (notice the amazing blue sky! April is not always that nice here in France, we got so lucky).

On Saturday, we went to my absolute favourite tourist attraction in the region: Versailles. I really love that Castle, it is so worth a visit! Anyone going to Paris needs to take a day to go to Versailles. My tips to make the trip better:

  • Go early
  • Start with a visit of the Gardens, the Trianon and the other attractions
  • Keep the Castle for the end, and only get inside around 3:30/4pm, there will be way less people inside and you will enjoy the visit way more!

People always start with the Castle, and the queue is unbelievable in the morning. Doing the visit the reverse way is great as you will see everything much better.

Make Your Own Chocolate Spread!

This week-end, I tried to make my own chocolate spread, and let me tell you, I will do it again!

I don’t know about you, but I like to know what I am eating, and with store-bought products, it’s not always very clear, and it’s hard to control everything you put in your mouth. However, I have no talent for cooking, and it usually takes me twice as long as recipes say, so when I try to replace store-bought products by homemade ones, it needs to be easy to do, fast and also allow me to use as many basic ingredients as possible (meaning I can control what I put in my food, otherwise there is no point).

There are many advantages to making your own chocolate spread instead of eating store-bought ones:

  • As I said, you have total control over the ingredients (bye bye palm oil and unnecessary additives!)
  • You can vary the taste by switching hazelnuts with coconuts or almonds for a little twist!
  • It’s so tasty you will never eat store-bought ones ever again.
  • It’s super easy to do, no excuse!

Ingredients:

200g dark chocolate

+/- 400g sweetened condensed milk (I used a 397g can, next time I will put a little less, but that’s because I like my food to not be too sweet – also, you can do your own with milk and sugar, but that needs more time, which I did not have)

40-70g grounded hazelnuts (totally according to your taste, you can use other types of nuts if you prefer)

150g soft butter

1 coffee spoon vanilla extract

No need for complicated tools: a microwave, a spoon or fork, a microwaveable bowl and a scale.

Let’s get started! 

  • First thing first, put all the ingredients EXCEPT the condensed milk in the bowl.

  • Microwave 2min, or until chocolate and butter are melted
  • Stir all the ingredients well

  • Add the sweetened condensed milk. If you are not sure whether it will be too sweet for you, don’t add everything at once, stir and taste until you are satisfied. Don’t forget that once it cools up it will taste slightly less sweet!
  • Put it in a jar and let it cool down for a while (if you can resist eating it).

That’s it!!

Super easy right? Maximum 5 minutes, and you have an amazingly tasty chocolate spread! Totally worth the effort, believe me.

I kept it in the bowl because I knew we would eat it super fast, but normally you should put it in a jar and keep it in the refrigerator.
